Summary

The presentation discusses the challenges and solutions for deploying applications at the edge, with a focus on Edge native and data handling. The use of Kubernetes and OpenShift is highlighted as a way to achieve consistency across different environments.
  • The challenge of deploying applications at the edge is to have a consistent operational and management model across different environments
  • Edge native applications need to take into account the different attributes of the edge, such as data handling and networking
  • Efficient data handling at the edge is crucial, with the need to balance processing at the edge and sending training bits back to the central model
  • Kubernetes and OpenShift can provide consistency across different environments, with the use of single node OpenShift allowing for deployment in disconnected environments
  • The use of ML/AI, 5G networking, and hardware acceleration are improving the evolution of edge technology
The presentation gives an example of how AI and ML can be used to coordinate emergency services, with the ability to process data at the edge and make real-time decisions. The use of ML/AI can save time and lives in emergency situations.

Abstract

Edge computing is drawing increased investments by organizations gaining efficiencies by taking advantage of automating physical activities. While consumer applications with connected homes have high awareness, significant business benefits are gained from using edge technology in commercial applications like the factory floor, mining operations, etc. Simulation of a digital twin of a complete factory or warehouse by embedding technology into devices can assist in making better decisions without large investments. Technologies used in edge solutions are AI/ML, 5G, IoT, and cloud native architectures. This panel discussion will discuss how cloud native tools provide business benefits to applying edge technology for physical process efficiencies. Larry Carvalho, Principal Consultant at RobustCloud LLC, will moderate this session. Stu Miniman from Red Hat will highlight how a cruise line operator used a Kubernetes-powered edge solution to deliver an excellent digital experience to ship guests in disconnected environments. Marilyn Basanta will discuss how a large ground shipping service was able to add a modern application platform to their distribution centers, ensuring higher employee productivity and business continuity during natural events. Muneyb Minhazuddin will talk about how a manufacturer modernizes applications on the factory floor as they converge IT and OT to create a dynamic and agile production line in a factory shop by software defining constrained devices.Join this session to learn more.
