West Side CD: The Deployment Ballet Goes On

2022-05-18

Authors:   Benoit Moussaud

Summary

The presentation discusses the evolution of deployment processes and the shift towards choreography between stakeholders. It introduces an innovative solution called cartographer.sh based on the concept of supply chains.
  • Deployment processes have evolved from slow, manual, and uncontrolled to fast, automated, and versioned.
  • The new generation of solutions aims to rely on choreography between stakeholders rather than orchestration.
  • Cartographer.sh is an innovative solution based on the concept of supply chains.
  • The solution promotes the use of containerization and cloud technology to deploy, update, and manage applications.
  • The presentation emphasizes the importance of integrating and deploying applications in production.
  • The four key personas involved in the deployment process are the dev, ops, app ops, and SRE.
The speaker emphasizes the importance of deploying applications in production and the need to promote them through several environments for testing. The integration phase is crucial in turning the code into versionable items, such as container images and configuration files. The presentation introduces cartographer.sh, an innovative solution that promotes the use of containerization and cloud technology to deploy, update, and manage applications. The solution is based on the concept of supply chains and aims to shift towards choreography between stakeholders rather than orchestration. The speaker highlights the importance of the four key personas involved in the deployment process: the dev, ops, app ops, and SRE.

Abstract

The way to bring a new version into production has changed a lot in recent years. From a slow, manual, and uncontrolled processor it has become over time fast, automated, and versioned. The tools have evolved, changed, been modernized, or even containerized, but they have remained centralized. The new generation of solutions intends to reverse this point of view by relying no longer on orchestration but on choreography between the different stakeholders. This session shows the difference between these two concepts and how it applies to the CI/CD domain that has remained ultimately very centralized and old-school then describes an innovative solution, (cartographer.sh) based on the concept of supply chains.Click here to view captioning/translation in the MeetingPlay platform!
