Intro + DeepDive: Kubernetes Cloud Provider Project for IBM Cloud

This conference presentation provides an overview of the Kubernetes Cloud Provider Project for IBM Cloud, including the sub-project Provider IBM Cloud and the Cluster API Provider for IBM Cloud. The presentation also discusses the activities of the Cloud Provider SIG and the challenges of maintaining currency with Kubernetes and the entire ecosystem of CNCF.

• The Cloud Provider SIG owns the Kubernetes Cloud Provider interface and related work, ensuring a consistent and high-quality user experience across different cloud providers.
• The Provider IBM Cloud is a sub-project of the Cloud Provider SIG and is responsible for building, deploying, maintaining, supporting, and using Kubernetes on the IBM Cloud platform.
• The Cluster API Provider for IBM Cloud is an extension of the Cluster API project that provides support for a specific cloud provider, in this case, IBM Cloud.
• Maintaining currency with Kubernetes and the entire ecosystem of CNCF can be challenging due to the speed at which they move.
• The Cloud Provider SIG is proposing to go from four to three releases of Kubernetes every year to address this challenge.

The Cloud Provider SIG ensures that the Kubernetes ecosystem evolves in a way that is neutral to all cloud providers, providing a consistent and high-quality user experience. The Provider IBM Cloud sub-project works with the open-source community to build, deploy, maintain, and support Kubernetes on the IBM Cloud platform. The Cluster API Provider for IBM Cloud extends the Cluster API project to meet the specific requirements of IBM Cloud. However, maintaining currency with Kubernetes and the entire ecosystem of CNCF can be challenging due to the speed at which they move. The Cloud Provider SIG is proposing to go from four to three releases of Kubernetes every year to address this challenge.

In this session, the project leads will provide an overview of the IBM Cloud Provider subproject, its activities, and learning resources. The introduction will be followed by the newly added support in Kubernetes IBM Cluster API Provider for IBM VPC Gen 2 and PowerVS. The session will also deep dive into the IBM Cloud Provider and provide updates on the general Cloud Provider SIG. This session will be of value to a broad audience including active contributors, new contributors, and those with an interest in the IBM Cloud Provider features and capabilities or the Kubernetes Cloud Provider in general.
