Authors:   Bill Mulligan

Summary

The talk discusses the composability of software in the cloud native ecosystem and how it compounds ideas, people, tools, and companies to create a virtuous life cycle. It emphasizes the reuse of existing community momentum and tools to avoid making the same investment twice.
  • Composability of software in the cloud native ecosystem compounds ideas, people, tools, and companies to create a virtuous life cycle
  • Existing community momentum and tools can be reused to avoid making the same investment twice
  • The ecosystem allows for innovation to move up the stack to tackle new challenges and solve new issues
  • The talk provides examples of how the ecosystem compounds ideas, people, tools, and companies
  • The talk emphasizes the importance of trust in the community and the value of a diverse contributor base
The speaker mentions how people who have worked together in the past are able to work together in the future because of the trust in the community. This trust is an important factor in attracting interested users and adding contributors to the ecosystem.

Abstract

The cloud native ecosystem is built of composable projects that can be stacked, recombined, reused, and built upon. This composability allows cloud native developers to iterate and ship functionality fast and creates compounding value to businesses from telcos to machine learning to gaming. This talk will trace the history of composability within the cloud native landscape from making Kubernetes pluggable and extensible through the CNI and CRI to standardizing observability with Prometheus and OTel to eBPF making security and networking composable with Cilium. Along the way we will discover how each interface and extension built the value of the project and the ecosystem as a whole creating a learning and business value flywheel. The audience will learn how the composability of cloud native has helped grow the public cloud, generated many successful startups, given meaningful careers to a wide variety of people, and why buying into composable ecosystems compounds business value.Click here to view captioning/translation in the MeetingPlay platform!
