Cloud Native Storage: The CNCF Storage TAG, Projects, Technology & Landscape

2022-10-27

Authors:   Raffaele Spazzoli, Alex Chircop

Summary

The presentation discusses cloud-native disaster recovery and the importance of testing and understanding performance benchmarks in cloud environments.
  • Cloud-native disaster recovery is a new approach to disaster recovery in the cloud
  • Testing and understanding performance benchmarks is crucial in cloud environments
  • Latency is a key factor in determining system performance
  • Caching happens at multiple layers in cloud systems
  • It is important to focus on testing your own applications in your own environments
The speaker mentions a common issue in performance benchmarking where someone publishes a high result but is actually only testing the speed of their cache rather than the speed of their file system.

Abstract

This talk will introduce the CNCF Storage TAG and discuss how the TAG operates, how we work with CNCF Storage projects, and the work we have done to build guidance and write whitepapers for the ecosystem. During this session we will cover an overview of storage projects in the CNCF, including the broader ecosystem, as well as projects that are currently being reviewed. We will also share updates of our latest work including the CNCF Storage Whitepaper, Performance and Benchmarking whitepaper and the Cloud Native Disaster Recovery whitepaper. Join us to find out how to contribute and participate in the CNCF storage community and discover practical guidance on how to use cloud native storage in your environments.
