2022-10-26

Authors:   Le Tran

Summary

The speaker discusses the importance of open learning tools and platforms in growing the Kubernetes community, and shares her personal experience of becoming a member of the community.
  • Growing the Kubernetes community is essential for its future success
  • Open learning tools and platforms can eliminate barriers to entry and make the community more welcoming
  • The speaker personally relied on free and beginner-friendly resources to learn about Kubernetes
  • The speaker highlights a particular feature of a free site called learnitocasm.io, which offers engaging and high-quality hands-on labs
  • The site was created for the community by the community, and continues to feature projects from the community
  • The site is being transformed into kubecon.io, and will involve learning partners to create an even bigger ecosystem of learning materials
The speaker shares her personal experience of crossing over to the Kubernetes community from a different industry, and feeling overwhelmed by the vast amount of learning material available. She emphasizes the importance of beginner-friendly resources and highlights a free site called learnitocasm.io, which offers engaging and high-quality hands-on labs. The labs are essentially a sandbox where users can work with real examples using actual clusters without having to set them up. The speaker found the labs to be a fun and effective way to learn about Kubernetes.

Abstract

Growing the Kubernetes community is essential for ensuring its strong and prosperous future. But Kubernetes and cloud native ecosystems overall are a complex web of knowledge, and it’s critical to continue to create bridges into the community via open learning tools and platforms. In this way, we can eliminate the barriers of entrance and grow the community effectively. To that end, the team at Kasten by Veeam has been working on building a free Kubernetes training site, Learning.Kasten.io. Through the site, new and existing members of the Kubernetes community can access blog posts, videos, books and hands-on labs, in order to create a comprehensive environment for learning about Kubernetes – one that is engaging, diverse and welcoming.During this session, Le Tran, a member of the technical staff from Kasten, will share her insights on the journey toward growing the Kubernetes community through learning tools, as well as her own story of becoming a member of the community.
