Helping others pays off. The TAG Contributor Strategy's (TAG CS) mission is to help open source projects succeed. Whether establishing best practices and tips for projects to recruit contributors, govern themselves effectively to stay healthy, scale sustainably and transparently, or mentor others effectively, TAG CS members get something out of it too. Join this panel discussion to hear from TAG CS members what they've gotten out of giving, including how it's shaped their careers, advanced their skills, and grown their own community. And if you are a maintainer and like what you hear, you should join us too!

The importance of good documentation in improving productivity, retaining customers, and managing changes in a company.
  • Good documentation is easy to understand, gets to the point, and has been vetted for accuracy
  • It includes the author and date, and addresses the right audience
  • Visual elements such as headings, callouts, and tables make documentation more engaging
  • Documentation tools such as Markdown, Read the Docs, and Confluence can help standardize and streamline the process
  • Empowering contributors and creating a positive feedback loop can encourage more people to write documentation
  • Managing documentation should be an official part of everyone's job description

Local User Groups, with physical meetings and were growing until covid hit. Replacement Zoom based groups have seen limited success. We would like to gather the user community to brainstorm ideas on how we might come out of the covid break, with a strong support system that allow users to make friends, share experiences and best practices, while providing feedback to projects & vendors. We are seeking an environment offering coaching and education, without crossing the line into highly partial promotion of commercial products. We’ll start with a brief introduction - then turn to moderator managed audience participation. If you are a member or an organizer of a group, we need your ideas. Please attend.Topics: How can we foster and improve local physical meetings, where users have a great learning & sharing experience? How can the CNCF and projects support the groups operating now? What is the best structure for global scope Zoom based User Groups? Special interest groups based on cloud type, or should it be use case based (such as Machine Learning, Financial, Retail, etc.)? Other?Bring us your ideas, and challenges, and share your experiences with the community - Help make the cloud native journey better for users.

When it comes to open source software, having a strong, active community that feels supported is imperative to success. Oftentimes, maintainers are tasked with an abundance of responsibilities but are also expected to set aside time to inform and engage with community members such as users, contributors, and others who are interested in the project. This is where community managers can step in to alleviate the burden and provide support. For those who are trying to understand what this hard-to-define role is, the responsibilities involved, and the value of having a community manager dedicated to your project, join Nanci (community manager for Carvel and Tanzu Community Edition(TCE) Open Source Software projects) and Karen (community manager for Helm and other CNCF projects) for a breakdown of what a community manager role can look like and the value of the role as they cover topics including:Maintainer and Contributor experienceEventsSocial media/communicationsGitHub Repo HealthCommunity MeetingsClick here to view captioning/translation in the MeetingPlay platform!

Have you ever thought about open sourcing a project but don't know where, or how, to start? Maybe you have already dipped your toes, but want to know more about what the process entails? Many open source projects are vendor backed with plenty of funding and backed by an army of marketing, program managers, solution architects and support, but if you’re not a vendor and lack all these resources, how do you grow your community and project? The Argo project was initiated by Applatix, after acquiring the company Intuit has carried the torch and Argo is now deployed at hundreds of companies and has a large and diverse community. However, the path wasn’t always easy and a lot of efforts went into making Argo what it is today.Come and listen to Kareena and Henrik as they tell the Argo journey story; the struggles, the learnings and the successes. The stories told will be applicable to any other open source projects and whether you work for an end-user of vendor company.
